How to become a certified burner?

  • Attend ‘ Prescribed Burn Certification’ class offered annually by NCDFR and pass the test at the training. The course dates are listed on NC DFR website or can be determined by calling Rosie Vandenberg 919-733-2162 x 252, or attend an alternate approved Burn School plus an abbreviated NC school covering the NC Prescribed Burn Act and Smoke Management System.  The NC courses require pre-registration. Previous training and experience in prescribed burning are strongly recommended before attending the school.

    • The landowner's name and address.
    • A description of the area to be burned.
    • A map of the area to be burned.
    • An estimate in tons of the fuel located on the area.
    • The objectives of the prescribed burning.
    • A list of the acceptable weather conditions and parameters for the prescribed burning.
    • The name of the certified prescribed burner responsible for conducting the prescribed burning.
    • A summary of the methods to start, control, and extinguish the prescribed burning.
    • Provision for reasonable notice of the prescribed burning to be provided to nearby homes and businesses to avoid effects on health and property.
  • Obtain a DFR burn permit and burn authorization, perform all notifications of neighbors and emergency response agencies.
  • Conduct the prescribed burn under NC Smoke Management Guidelines following the plan while observed by a certified burner.
  • Have the observing certified burner document the event and recommend your certification to Jim Prevette, NC DFR Fire Chief, using the form below.
