President's Message
Ken Bridle
The North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council is moving ahead with the implementation of the strategic plan which was finalized late last year and is being published and distributed this year. If you are interested in improving professional development for prescribed fire practitioners, the effects of public policy, laws and regulations on the ability to use prescribed fire as a tool, if you would like to help educate the public and policy makers on the benefits of prescribed fire, we have a way you can get involved. The council has given a lot of thought and energy to goals and strategies that will help make prescribed fire safer, more effective, and more common. Click here to read more.

Plants on Fire
Johnny Randall
It seems incongruous that many of our fire-dependent plants are those that inhabit the mucky organic soils of the coastal plain – particularly those associated with pocosins, an Algonquin Indian word meaning "swamp on a hill". (It is sad to contemplate the fact that early settlers "removed" the people from whom we might have learned a wealth of coastal ecology. But that’s another story…). Click here to read more.

Longleaf Academy: Longleaf 101
Jennifer Evans
A "Longleaf Academy: Longleaf 101" was recently held on May 8-10 in Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines, NC by The Longleaf Alliance (LLA) with support from the NC Forest Service through a grant from the US Forest Service. Participants included landowners, consultants, and staff from state, federal, and non-profit organizations. Workshops included presentations on the history of the longleaf pine, natural and artificial regeneration techniques, restoring native understory plants, and of course, the role of fire in longleaf pine management.
